In this episode, we discuss alcohol abuse and mental health with Thando Pato, a writer who just published her first book called On The Rocks. Thando discusses her personal story related to alcohol abuse, her strategies around mental health, and the journey to writing the book.
This is a memoir of a high functioning alcoholic. Thando speaks about recovery and mental health. Alcohol abuse is about denial. It’s about self discovery. It’s about self betrayal. It’s about self love. Her book is about growth. She recounts how disconnected she was, which scared her. Whenever an emotion would pop up, her first instinct was to drown it. She was also diagnosed with breast cancer, and did not allow herself to feel in that year. She was terrified. She had to go through chemotherapy. And that is a mental journey. Chemotherapy wasn’t a physical journey. It was a mental one. And it really messed with her, along with the fact that she was into menopause. Her body changed and her hormones were going crazy. So there was all these things happening. And her solace was alcohol.
